Nathan Makowski, PhD
Dr. Makowski's research focuses on restoring mobility and independence after partial paralysis (e.g. stroke, incomplete spinal cord injury). Our team is developing fully implanted as well as non-invasive assistive devices that coordinate neural stimulation with remaining function with a focus on translation. We are designing control methods and evaluating whether implementing these interventions in people with paralysis enables walking and independence in the home and community.
Dr. Makowski received a BS in Engineering from Hope College and a PhD in Biomedical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University. He then completed his postdoctoral training at the Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center and is presently on faculty at the MetroHealth System in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is involved in research studies both at MetroHealth Medical Center and the Cleveland VA.
