Restoring Lower Limb Neural Connection (ReLLiNC) Lab

MSL project - Mike Miller and participant

The Restoring Lower Limb Neural Connection (ReLLiNC) Lab focuses on developing and applying innovative neurotechnologies that interface with the nerves in the lower limb to restore sensorimotor function.  We utilize novel neural interface technology to interact with the nervous system of individuals with lower limb amputations.  High-density nerve cuff electrodes are installed around the peripheral nerves in the residual limb. Electrical stimulation through these electrodes elicits sensations that are perceived as originating from the participant’s missing limb.

Our research has spanned from working with individuals who have experienced limb loss to a broader focus on sensorimotor neural circuitry in the lower limb. We are at the forefront of understanding how this sensory feedback intertwines with other sensory and physiological systems, marking a significant stride in illuminating the vital role of sensorimotor integration in enriching our interaction with the surrounding environment.
