The UroMonitor Takes Monitoring Out of the Clinic

Created and developed by researchers in the Department of Biomedical Engineering, a wireless, insertable pressure sensor to assist in the diagnosis of urinary incontinence is now one step closer to clinical application. The team is actively recruiting patients for a trial that will begin in early 2020. “Our vision is to take the monitoring out of the clinic, and to take the catheter out of the monitoring,” said Margot Damaser, PhD, who created and oversees development of the UroMonitor. Now, a team of biomedical engineers has created a type of electrode that can be injected into the body as a liquid, then harden into a stretchy, taffy-like substance. Working with Andrew Shoffstall at Case Western Reserve University and Manfred Franke of Neuronoff Inc., a California-based biotech company, Ludwig and colleagues developed an electrode consisting of bits of metal and a silicon base—similar to surgical glue—that combine to form a thick liquid. Neuronoff, Inc., a development-stage medical device company, announced the award of a $2.2 million National Institutes of Health (NIH) grant to test its Injectrode™, a novel injectable metal electrode, as an alternative means of treating chronic back pain. The Injectrode™ cures inside the body and is molded to the shape of the specific target. The project will be a collaborative effort led by Kip Ludwig, associate professor in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Neurological Surgery at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A robotic arm smoothly traces the movements of a cursor on a computer screen, controlled by the brain activity of a person sitting close by who stares straight ahead. The person wears a cap covered in electrodes. This "mind-controlled" robot limb is being manipulated by a brain-computer interface (BCI), which provides a direct link between the neural information of a brain that's wired to an electroencephalography (EEG) device and an external object. Congratulations to Jeffrey Capadona, PhD who has received a 5-year VA Rehabilitation Research & Development (RR&D) Research Career Scientist Award effective this month. Dr. Capadona's research lies in studying various aspects of microelectrode performance, and pursuing both materials-based and therapeutic-mediated methods to mitigate the neuroinflammatory-mediated microelectrode failure mechanisms.
