Progress in 3-D printing for biomedical applications.
Kath Bogie, PhD, a researcher with the Advanced Platform Technology (APT) Center at the Louis Stokes Cleveland Veterans Affairs Medical Center (LSCVAMC) and with Case Western Reserve University, exhibited at a briefing for congress members, scientists, entrepreneurs and technologists regarding applications for additive manufacturing in medicine. The briefing was hosted by Carnegie Mellon University and America Makes in conjunction with the House Manufacturing Caucus and the House Maker Caucus.
Dr. Bogie directs the Additive Manufacturing for Biotechnology resource, which has been designated as Core Facility by the School of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU). The facility includes a 3D-Bioplotter, which enables fabrication of biocompatible constructs from a wide array of materials, from soft hydrogels over polymer melts to hard ceramics and metals. The Additive Manufacturing for Biotechnology Core is an open access facility available for use by the community at large and enhances collaboration between the APT Center and researchers across the country for further information click here.
Dr. Bogie presented prototypes her team has produced using 3-D printing for healthcare applications. These included small flexible implantable sensors, a personalized heel tissue health testing device and aero-balls with variable softness for use in a low cost modular wheelchair cushion.
Dr. Bogie is a biomedical engineer with a background in translational research in tissue health, wound management and wheelchair seating. Dr. Bogie leads studies to develop health maintenance technologies, including the Smart Modular Adaptive Electrotherapy Delivery System (smartMAEDS) to concurrently treat and monitor chronic ischemic wounds and an advanced modular cushion for cost-effective pressure relief.
