Eyelid Closure Stimulation Device
The Eyelid Closure Stimulation Device was brought to VehiCLE as an idea. Patients that must keep one or both eyes closed for a prolonged period of time due to eye surgery often have to have their eye sewn shut. This is effective, but can be scary and involves risk of infection. The idea was to use electrical stimulation to signal the muscles that control the eyelid to keep the eye shut. This is a less invasive solution, but to make this practical, it has to be portable and easy to use.We were able to find and modify electrodes that are safe for use on the face and determine correct placement of the pads in order to target the correct never to stimulate the orbicularis oculi muscle to close the eyelid. We paired these electrodes with a TENS unit that was able to control the amplitude, frequency and wavelength of the stimulation in order to give the clinician and patient control over the stimulation.
Next Steps:
The Eyelid Closure Stimulation Device is now being reviewed by the inventor. The next steps would include building a custom stimulation unit and enclosure that is smaller and more easily wearable. Additionally, other applications for this device are being explored.
