Evi Stavrou, MD

Dr. Evi StavrouResearch interests
Vascular Biology, Venous thrombosis, Thromboinflammation

Dr. Stavrou’s research is focused on developing novel therapeutic strategies for the treatment of venous thrombosis and inflammatory diseases. Her laboratory has identified a pool of FXII (a coagulation factor) in neutrophils that is critical to cell function. Dr. Stavrou’s lab is currently testing the hypothesis that the neutrophil FXII signaling pathway plays a role in the inflammatory response and venous thrombosis that is independent, and beyond its protease function, introducing a novel targetable pathway for the treatment of chronic wounds and venous thrombotic disorders. Dr. Stavrou is also currently working on optimizing a microfluidic device that will enable the study of leukocyte functions in a physiologic manner and in real-time. Additionally, in collaboration with engineering teams at CWRU, she has developed a novel dielectric microsensor (ClotChip), based on the fully electrical technique of dielectric spectroscopy, to monitor the blood coagulation process in a miniaturized, portable measurement platform. Based on preliminary data, they show that the ClotChip is more sensitive than conventional, laboratory-based coagulation tests and that it can provide additional information on the entire blood coagulation process at the Point-Of-Care.

Dr. Stavrou is a Staff Physician in the Division of Hematology-Oncology and Director of the Anticoagulation Clinic at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center. She is also an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University, as well as an Oscar D. Ratnoff Designated Professor in Medicine and Hematology. In 2014, she was appointed Co-Chairman of the Scientific Subcommittee on Factor XI and the Contact System of the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH). She serves as associate editor of the journal Frontiers in Medicine (Hematology) and is a member of Thrombosis Research Publications Committee.
