Dr. Douglas Shire is currently a Research Health Scientist at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center, and a Visiting Scientist at Cornell University's NanoScale Science and Technology Facility. He joined the Advanced Platform Technology Center in 2013 upon receiving SPiRE and Merit awards to continue his work. His research interests are in high-density implantable in-line connectors and peripheral neurostimulation systems. He received the BEACON Consortium's Medical Technology Award in 2012 for his work with the former VA Center for Innovative Visual Rehabilitation at the Boston VA Healthcare System. Dr. Shire is a micro-fabrication expert by training, and he has been applying his expertise in micro- and nanotechnology to outstanding problems in Rehabilitation research and development since the 1990s.
