Joseph Potkay, PhD

Joseph Potkay, PhDDr. Joseph A. Potkay received his B.S.E. in Computer Engineering from the University of Cincinnati in 2000 (valedictorian), and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan in 2002 and 2006. His doctoral research at Michigan, under the direction of Prof. Ken Wise, focused on the development of the microvalves and microcolumns for a high performance, low power, microfluidic gas chromatography system. In 2006, Dr. Potkay joined the Department of Veterans Affairs as a Research Investigator with the goal of bringing the huge potential of micro- and nano-technologies to bear on issues critical to the Veteran population. He also currently serves as a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Surgery at University of Michigan.

Dr. Potkay holding an artificial lungDr. Potkay has 36 peer-reviewed publications, 2 patents, has presented his research at local, national, and international conferences, and has been interviewed by Public Radio, Nature Magazine, and CNN regarding his artificial lung research. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), the Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS), the American Society for Artificial Internal Organs (ASAIO), and the Extracorporeal Life Support Organization. He is a member of the Research and Development Committee of the Ann Arbor VA Healthcare System, a member of the editorial board of the ASAIO Journal, and has served on VA and NIH grant review panels. He has held local, regional, and national research grants including Career Development, SPiRE, and Merit Review Awards from the Department of Veterans Affairs and R21 and R01 awards from NIH.
