Soumyajit Mandal, Ph.D

Dr. Soumyajit MandalDr. Mandal has a broad background in biomedical electronics, bioinstrumentation, and sensor physics. He has developed a wireless, battery-free, wearable tag for pervasive monitoring of multiple biomedical signals, such as heart sounds (phonocardiogram; PCG), ECG, blood oxygen saturation (photoplethysmogram; PPG), respiratory sounds, blood pressure, and body temperature. Additionally, he developed a low-power, broadband, bidirectional transcutaneous wireless data link. This link was an important part of a large multi-institute NIH-funded project to develop implanted neural prosthesis systems (brain-machine interfaces). It was shown to be extremely robust and power-efficient, and was later used for successful wireless recording of action potentials from the brain of an awake, behaving primate (rhesus monkey). His research interests are in sensor interfaces, low-power computation, energy harvesting, and energy-efficient communication techniques for both non-invasive and implanted biomedical electronics.
