Prosthetics Fabrication Laboratory

Army Vet ProstheticThe Prosthetics Fabrication Laboratory is a 3,000 square foot space that allows for the design, production, and/or fitting of prostheses using new and emerging technologies such as microprocessor controlled knee and ankle joints. The Prosthetic Fabrication Laboratory became ABC accredited in 2010 and is currently under the direction of Mr. William Jones, BOCP. It is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art equipment and latest technologically advanced components to Veterans in need of prosthetic limbs or orthotic devices. This facility has state-of-the-art scanning, printing and casting equipment for the fabrication of prosthesis and orthosis for both upper and lower extremities. Having an on–site fabrication laboratory allows the LSCVAMC to be more responsive to the custom needs of each individual Veteran, and in so doing save an average of $2.7 million each year in outside services. It also enables prosthetists and orthotists to participate in research and interact regularly with APT Investigators and staff.

The instrumentation available in the laboratory includes a Willow Wood omega tracer system that includes scanners and CNC machine, a Structure Scanner system, Create O&P 3-D Printers, an Otto Bock laser alignment platform, a laminating room with Becker Orthopedic vacuum station, and fully operational machine and plaster rooms.

The Lab is staffed by Certified Prosthetist Orthotists, Certified Orthotists, Certified Pedorthists, Certified Fitters of Orthotics and Fabrication Technicians.

The most recent state of the art components that have been fit and issued to our veterans have been:

  • C-Brace microprocessor stance control orthoses by Ottobock
  • Myopro upper extremity exoskeletal orthoses by Geauga Rehab
  • Empower Microprocessor ankle by Ottobock
  • Power Knee, Rheo, and Symbionic legs by Ossur
  • X3/Genium microprocessor knees by Ottobock
  • Plie Knee by Freedom Innovations
  • Microprocessor feet
