Cycling Program

Clinical Cycling Program for Veterans with Paralysis

The clinical cycling program was designed to meet the rehabilitation goal of improving overall endurance and maximal power output in the lower limbs of those with paralysis. This program evaluates the effectiveness of exercise training interventions including rowing, cycling, or the Nu-Step (24-36 sessions of each) to improve muscle strength and endurance. Stimulating electrodes are placed on the skin allowing a stimulator to send electrical signals through those electrodes to the muscles enabling individuals to cycle, row, or produce the stepping motion. Recumbent bicycles and rowing machines are adapted and configured for individuals with lower extremity paralysis and muscle stimulation gives subjects the ability to obtain a good workout despite their injuries. The recumbent bike is also capable of being used outdoors overground which has potential to allow individuals to ride in the community.
