VehiCLE

Single-Hand Use Syringe

The Single-Hand Use Syringe came to VehiCLE as an idea for a syringe that could be operated with one hand during pain management treatment while the other and is free to operate other devices.  The two main uses are for ultrasound imaged pain management procedures, where a clinicial will use ultrusound to view the advancement of the needle into the desired area, or during flouroscopy imaged pain management, in which the clinician would need to let go of the syringe altogether while an image is taken of the needle at various stages. Due to the need to remove their hands frequently, many clinicians opt for fewer images so that they do not continuously need to remove and reattach a syringe to the needle.

VehiCLE produced 3 solutions.  One that met the needs of flouroscopy imaging (removal of hands from the syringe during imaging), one that met the needs of utrasound images (single-hand use) and a final design that meets the needs of both operations.  The flouroscopy solution is an adaptation to a normal syringe that extends the syringe with a flexible tube that connects to the needle, allowing the syringe to lay next to the user during imaging.  The ultrasound solution consists of a custom plunger adapter that allows the clinician to deliver lidocaine by pressing down with their thumb while advancing the needle, reducing the need for the other hand.
The final solution is a custom, silicone bulb that holds the desired amount of lidocaine for one procedure. A check valve connect to the bulb and to the needle so that lidocaine can be pushed out, but the bulb does not pull suction back.  This can be balanced during flouroscopy imaging, and can be used with one hand during ultrasound.

Next Steps:
The Single-Hand Use Syringe has been fabricated out of 100% silicone and tested under imaging.  The next steps are marketing to a potential licensee, and exploring molding solutions for higher quantity production.
