VehiCLE

IRONMAN

The IRONMAN was brought to VehiCLE as an idea for an implantable, high volume flow, long term blood pump. The idea was to design a pump that is larger than any of the current devices that are implanted through the arteries by implanting this device through the venous system.  This device is targeted at patients that do not pass the physical requirements for an LVAD surgery, which requires open heart surgery.

As this is a highly technical and extremely complex device, our team worked with an outside company to model and simulate turbomachinery for this device.  We were able to create a model of an impeller design that meets the criteria for the amount of flow needed, while keeping the shear low enough to meet requirements for hemolysis.  We ran simulations at various speeds and with various impellers and catheters to determine the ideal design.

Our final package included the 3D models, simulation results and a physical to-scale model so that this device can be pitched to outside companies, or so that additional funding can be procured in order to make a functional prototype.
